When CO₂ passes through lime water, it turns into milky lime water due to formation of water insoluble calcium carbonate which is white in color.
Ca(OH)₂ ---> + CO₂ ---> CaCO₃ + H₂O
If CO₂ is passed for a longer period, white color disappears due to formation of water soluble Calcium bicarbonate.
CaCO₃ + H₂O + CO₂ ---> Ca(HCO₃)₂
