This is because the friction between the mechanical components of the engine prevents smooth movements. This causes a lot of energy loss in the form of heat and sound. In other words, friction increases between the mechanical parts. You have already read that greasing, oiling, lubrication etc can decrease friction, thus it is important to get the machine parts frequently greased and oiled.
