Explain why most of the metals do not displace hydrogen from nitric acid.

because nitric acid acts as a strong oxidising agent and hence it reduces the hydrogen.

It does, if the nitric acid is dilute. If the HNO3 is concentrated the gas produced is a mixture of oxides of nitrogen, because concentrated nitric acid is a powerful oxidizing agent andcan oxidize free hydrogen to water. ... When it react with metallic elements it get converted to water as it get oxidsed .
