Explain why of the two o nitrophenol or p nitrophenol has higher boiling point
Answers
This is because of Hydrogen bonding .
There are two types of Hydrogen bonding
1.Intramolecular Hydrogen bonding
2.Intermolecular Hydrogen
O-nitrophenol undergoes intramolecular Hydrogen bonding and it can be easily separated during heating since it doesn't have any major interaction with other molecules near by. For example when your friends aren't coming with you while returning home from school it takes less time for you to reach home.
P-nitrophenol undergoes intermolecular Hydrogen bonding. It interacts with atoms of different molecules near by and increase its boiling point. Since it has a connection with nearby molecules it won't go out easily ( more temperature is needed , hence more the boiling point). For example when your returning with your friends you'll take a little more extra time to reach home.
