Explain why ortho hydro oxybenzoic acid has lower melting point than para hydroxybenzoic acid

The reason behind this is that As per the literature at 760mm of mercury, p-hydroxy benzoic acid has lower boiling point than o-hydroxy benzoic acid .Hope this would be helpful.

The reason is the ortho effect in Benzoic acid. Due to presence of functional group at ortho position, the carboxylic group and functional group are not in a single plane. Thus the resonance will not take place. And the ortho substitutedbenzoic acid would be more acidic than para substituted.
