• PURE WATER HAS THE MAXIMUM WATER POTENTIAL (free energy) :
following are the reasons
1) water molecules have kinetic energy in liquid as well as the gaseous state they are in constant motion
2)the greater the concentration of water in a system the greater its kinetic energy and its water potential
3)the pure water will have the greatest water potential
4)if two systems having water are in constant example soil and air or cell and solution random the moment of water molecules will occur from the system with higher energy to the one with lower energy
8 equilibrium the water will move from the system containing water at Higher water potential to one having low water potential
5)water potential is represented by a Greek symbol "psi" it is expressed in pressure units such as pascels water potential of pure water and define a temperature and pressure is taken to be zero
6)if impure water as solute is dissolved its concentration decreases thereby reducing its water potential so all solutions have a lower water potential than pure water the magnitude of the lowering due to dissolution of solute is termed as the solute potential
7)more than solute molecules the lower or more negative the solute potential ( at atmospheric pressure)

hey mate!
pure water has minimum water potential because it contains minimum amount of solute in it.
as water potential is inversely proportional to the amount of solute dissolved in it.
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE FREE ENERGY OF MOLECULES OFPURE WATER AND FREE ENERGY OF THE SOLUTION IS CALLED WATER POTENTIAL OFTHE SYSTEM.
the water potential of pure water is minimum because the pure water had greater free energy .
THE FREE ENERGY , LOWER DOWN BY ADDITION OF SOLUTE.
