Respiration is a cellular process which generates energy by breaking down molecules whereas photosynthesis is a process which prepares food for the plants.

Respiration is a process in which an organisms inhale oxygen from the external environment and give out carbon dioxide to the surroundings and generates energy for the cellular processes whereas in photosynthesis, plant use carbon dioxide from outside and produce oxygen to the surroundings.
