Shivaji was a powerful ruler of the Marathas due to the following reasons,

-He was a strong military leader which is why his soldiers respected him and listened to him. They followed his tactics in war to be victorious.

-He was courageous as he took the Mughal's head on. Everyone was aware of the never ending tenure of the Mughal's who were strong to defeat. It took great courage to stand against them let alone try to fight them. Shivaji showed courage and thats why he was known as a good leader.

-He showed that a small army can defeat a large army as well.

-He was the one who founded the never ending reign of Maratha Empire.
