broad straps reduce the pressure on the shoulder or on the hand.we know pressure=force,area..so increasing the area decrease the pressure...
in thin straps the area is small so pressure is more..

there are 2 resons behind that
1. if the strap is strong and we put some heavy weight in it it will create friction between strap and our hand
2. if the strap is weak it will break
