A common explanation is that the Civil War was fought over the moral issue of slavery. In fact, it was the economics of slavery and political control of that system that was central to the conflict. A key issue was states' rights.

Answer:
The US Civil war was fought between the Confedarates (who wanted to keep slavery) and the Union (who wanted to abolish it). When Abraham Lincoln was elected as president, the southerners (confedarates) were scared that he was going to abolish slavery in the south. The war's starting point was the Battle of Fort Sumter. This 4 year long war ended with the Confederates defeat and the abolition of slavery all around United States.
