as sliding decreases friction, it is less than static friction

Static friction is a friction which acts when the object is at rest . When the object is at rest , there is no movement. Hence the interlocking of irregularities , which is the main cause of friction , remains interlocked for some time.
Sliding friction comes into effect when the object slides over a surface. When an object slides over a surface , there is interlocking of irregularities , but for a short amount of time

The main reason that sliding friction is less than static friction depends on the time of the interlocking , whether it is more or less.

Hope helped :-)
