The valence electron in sodium is easier to be donated hence contributing to high reactivity. You can compare the electronegativity value of both elements, sodium is 0.93 while magenesium is 1.31 for metals lower electronegativity means more reactive

Because it can easily lose one electron.

Explanation:

A reactive metal has the ability to easily lose an electron and acquire a positive charge. Sodium easily loses electrons and acquires a positive charge.

Sodium easily lose electrons than magnesium and get oxidized to Na^+ easily.

Sodium with atomic number of 11 has electronic configuration of 2,8 ,1. thus it has to lose one electron to attain noble gas configuration whereas Magnesium with atomic number of 12 has electronic configuration of 2,8, 2. and  it has to lose two electrons to attain noble gas configuration.
