explain why some metals are more reactive than others

It is so because, even if they both have 1 valence electron, the position or the energy level where this valence electron is, also affects how reactive they are. The closer the valence electron to the nucleus, the more energy is needed to start a reaction. The valence electron of Lithium is nearer, thus reaction is more difficult than Potassium.

it depends on the number of electrons it wants to gain or to loose
for example sodium and magnesium
Na has it loose 1 electron and magnesium has to loose 2 electrons
therefore Na is more reactive than Mg
TRICK: the more a ion has to loose the less reactive it is the less the ion has to loose the more is its reactivity
