Explain why substitution of ligands in complex compounds often result in colour change

  • Most of the transition metal complexes have different colours that depends on identity of metal and the ligands.
  • If we keep metal constant but vary the ligands, the colour also changes.
  • The crystal field theory explain the colour of coordination compounds to d-d transition of electrons.
  • In absence of ligands, the crystal field splitting does not occur and hence substance is colourless.
