It was because of horizon that makes sun elliptical during his appearance on earth.

this is because of atmospheric refraction
Earth's atmosphere is thin at the top and dense at the bottom
so, light travels faster in thin air than in dense air
so, the sun is raised upwards
the refracted light reaches our eyes and we see an elliptical sun at the horizon
