The point on earth, closest to the Sun is the equator and therefore, the areas through which the equator passes, get the maximum sunlight and heat. The sun’s intensity becomes less, as one moves farther away from the equator, towards the North pole or South pole. As a result, the temperature drops gradually as we move away from equatorial regions.
The poles are ice-capped, as the Sun’s rays barely reach the North and South poles.
