It acts as a strong reducing agent,ie, it gets oxidised to d3 configuration from d4.Now,from crystal field theory,we know that d3 configuration is highly stable due to half filled t2g orbitals.
So,it acts as a strong reducing agent so that it gets oxidised to a more stable configuration.
