explain why the alkyl halides though polar are immiscible with water.

Water molecules are bonded to each other by hydrogen bonds. Also, molecules o falkyl halides have forces of attraction between them. So in order to break the existing bonds energy is required, and the energy released when new interaction are formed is lesser than what is required to break the existing interactions.
