In the caricature, the artist wanted to depict the actual social dilemma. The noblemen set a trap for the peasants and sucked them dry; they basically lived off the peasants. A spider, in a similar way, sets a trap for the flies, and once they are stuck, consumes them slowly. Thus, the nobility is depicted as a spider while the paupers are depicted as flies.
