In case of clinical mercuric thermometer, the mercury expands and flows up the tube as the temperature rises. The mercury is forced up through the constriction by the force of the expansion. The body temperature is rarely below 35 and can go up rarely to 42 thus the readings in thermometer is within such degrees celsius.
