Explain why the critical path is the longest path through a network

In project mangement, a critical path is the sequence of project network activities add up to the longest overall duration, regardless if that longest duration has float or not. A project can have several, parellel, near critical paths; and some or all of the tasks could have 'free float' and/or 'total float'.
