Compound machines have low mechanical efficiency is because they have more moving parts and thus more friction to overcome.
Machines are not 100% efficiency some of the work done by a machine is used to overcome friction. So, work output is always less than work input.

The performance of a machine can never be 100%.
- Efficiency = (Output work)/(Input work)
- In an actual system, there may be some energy loss due to friction and weight of moving components which means output work is always less than the input work because some of the input work is used to reduce the friction.
- If a machine were 100% efficient, then it can't have any power losses to friction. So, there would be no friction. In that case, the theoretical and actual mechanical output could be the same which is not possible.
Therefore, the efficiency of a machine is always less than 100%.
