To assume that the major settlements of the Harappan Civilisation were located in the semi-arid areas with little rainfall is a mistake, since the weather pattern of the present day sites of HC are not the same as that of 5000 years ago.
The present day Thar desert and the surrounding areas were much wetter in the past, especially 6000 to 3500 years before present [ 4000 BCE -1500 BCE].
They received good amount of rainfall which supported wide variety of crops leading to flourishing of culture and civilisation.
