The port of Surat declined towards the end of
the 18th century. The gross value of trade that passed through Surat had been
16 million but by 1740s it was reduced to 3 million rupees. This was mainly
because of the growing power of the European Companies in India. These
Companies gradually gained power and started controlling the sea trade. They
obtained a number of concessions from local courts and gained monopoly rights
to trade. The Companies did not want to use the old ports of Surat,
Masulipatnam and Hooghly. So they developed the ports of Bombay and Calcutta instead.
