A complex system of fold mountain ranges with some plateaux in between the ranges is found in the region south of the Northern Lowlands of Asia. A close look at this system shows several mountain ranges meeting in a small zone that has been named the Pamir Knot.
To the east and south of the Pamir Knot , extend the Kunlun and Tien Shan mountains respectively. The Himalayas emerge from the Pamir Knot and extend in a south-easterly direction as a wide arc across the northern extent of India. They then turn southwards into Myanmar as the Arakan Yoma range. The Karakoram range is a short range, which extends south-eastwards from the Pair knot, and the Plateau of Tibet is located between the Kunlun and the Himalayas.
