Explain why the sliding friction is less than static friction

Friction comes into play when irregularities present in the surfaces of two objects in contact get interlocked with each other. In sliding, the time given for interlocking is very small.Because of this reason, sliding friction is less than static friction.

when u see in an microscopic level there will be irregular surface bourdries..even if it smooth it will surely be irregular at microscopic level...so the area of contact during motion will be less than that of static case...thus the friction is more in case of static....
