Sound travel faster in  metal than air becoz molecules of solid are closely packed and it will take less time for sound waves to travel from one molecule to another whereas in liquid, molecules are some what  apart so it will take little more time for sound waves to travel whereas in gas, molecules are far apart so it will take more time for sound waves to travel. In case of vacuum there are no molecules at all so sound is not there.that is why in space we cannot hear anything.
speed of sound in solid>speed of liquid>speed of gas
