Explanation:

Variation of g due to Shape of Earth

As the earth is an oblate spheroid, its radius near the equator is more than its radius near poles. Since for a source mass, the acceleration due to gravity is inversely proportional to the square of the radius of the earth, it varies with latitude due to the shape of the earth.

Answer:

Cause is due to change of radius

Explanation: In a more easier way of explanation:-

We know that gravity is highest on the surface of the earth and decreases as we go away from the center towards the atmosphere.

and acceleration at the surface of earth is taken as g=9.8 ms^-2

The reason the value varies below and above the earths surface is because of certain factors that tend to decide the gravity but we take a standard value of g=9.8 so its easier to calculate during numericals as if we were not having a standard value it would be hard to get the exact value of what we want to find which is  why it is considered universally as g=9.8.
