explain why the walls of a dam are thicker near the bottom at the top

The walls of dam are thick in the bottom due to atmospheric pressure in liquids. This means to say that the pressure of atmosphere is highest in the bottom and lowest at the top. Due to this, liquid also exert pressure highest in the bottom. That's why the bottom of dams are thick.

as pressure increases with depth the bottom of the dam has more pressure than the top. if the walls are not thicker the dam would break with high pressure. This is why dams are thicker at bottom
