tipu sultan allied with french because he could foresee the growing power of the british.in 1792 tipu sultan was defeated in his capital.tipu sultan was determined to fight the British and hence engaged in another battle with them in 1798 he didn't get the french support as promised and hence was defeated but he fought till his last breath
