• When the leaf is swollen, it is easier to stain and visualise the features of the leaf under the microscope and used as a temporary mount of a leaf pea.
• When the leaf is turgid, it absorbs water and makes the guard cells to absorb water which will open the stomatal pores to open. Thus the stomatal structure can be visualised better.
• If the leaf is not turgid, the stomata become flaccid and shrink and so cannot be visualised properly.
