It is so because of the wood is a solid and the air is gaseous...and due to the intermolecular force of attraction.. the particles of wood are more strongly packed as compared to air- where the attraction is feeble and barely enough to put the particles together..And hence the particls in wood are densly packed and that of air r very less densely packed
