Actually, white light contains all the colours.
When it passes through a prism, white light gets divide into other colours having different wavelength and velocity.
Due to different velocity, their refrective index are also different, due to which red bends less and violet bends most.
As, bending of light occurs due to speed difference in two mediums.
Hence, white light disperses into different colours when passes through prism and it is called dispersion.
