This is because only a single digit is supposed to be entered in the ones column

The regrouping is important because if you do not regroup, you will get a completely different answer.

And regrouping makes the sum equations easier.

Here is an example:

No regrouping:

 16

+ 16

212

Regrouping:

 16

+ 16

--------

32


So you need to add the remaining number in the tens column in order to show that the value has increased.
