Hey frnd...
Here is the answer.

The model was proposed by singer and nicolson in 1972 .According to this model, the cell membrane is made up of a continuous bilayer of phospholipids and proteins.
The lipids and membrane proteins are dispersed in a mosaic arrangement .These membrane proteins belong to two categories- intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic proteins are found permanently embedded in the lipid bilayer and extrinsic proteins are found either on the outer surface or on the inner surface of the membrane .This is the reason why Singer and Nicolson called these proteins a number of protein Iceberg floating in a sea of lipids. These proteins act as enzymes to catalyse reactions ,as pumps for active transport ,as receptor proteins to help in endocytosis (injection of Material by cell) and as transport proteins to help in the movement of water soluble substances.

Hope it helps..
