female egg has 23x chromosomes while male sperms have either 23x or 23y chromosomes. If the egg combines with sperm havin 23 x chromosomes, a female foetus is formed with 46 xx chromosomes. If the egg gets combined with sperm having 23y chromosomes, a male foetus is formed with 46xy chromosomes.
