Answer:

Explanation:

Newland could arrange elements only up to calcium, out of the total 56 elements known. After calcium, every eighth element did not possess properties similar to that of the first. Only 56 elements were known at the time of Newlands, but later several elements were discovered. The major limitations of Newlands' law of octaves were : (i) It was applicable to only lighter elements having atomic masses upto 40 u, i.e., upto calcium. After calcium, the first and the eighth element did not have similar properties. When the elements are arranged in increasing order of their atomic masses, the properties of the eighth element are similar to that of the first. Examples : The eight element from lithium is sodium. Similarly, eight element from sodium is potassium.

Answer:

Limitations of Newlands' law of octaves.

Explanation:

1. Newlands' law of octaves was a law related to the elements and their classification.

2. This law given by Newlands was applicable only upto calcium.

3. There were some more elements known at that time. But, Newlands could not classify the elements after calcium.

4. Newlands created a table for 56 elements.

5. He fitted them in 7 columns × 8 rows method.

6. Newlands placed two or more elements in the same box to classify all the known elements.

Example:

1. Newlands placed Cobalt ( Co ) & Nickel ( Ni ) in the same box.

2. Also, he placed Cerium ( Ce ) & Lanthanum ( La ) in the same box.

7. Newlands placed some elements with different properties below the same note in the law of octaves.

Example:

1. Newlands placed metals Cobalt ( Co ) & Nickel ( Ni ) under the note 'Do' where halogens were placed.

2. He placed Iron ( Fe ) with non-metals Oxygen ( O ) & Sulphur ( S ) under the note 'Ti'.

8. Newlands octave have not any place to accommodate the newly discovered elements.

Example:

Newlands law of octaves couldn't place the inert gases Neon ( Ne ) & Argon ( Ar ).
