Atomic Number:

In the nucleus of an atom ,the number of the protons is called atomic number. It is the sum of number of protons existing  in the nucleus of an atom. Same as the  number of electrons for a neutral atom. Example, atomic number of sodium is 11.

Isotopes are defined as elements with the same atomic number but different mass numbers. Example, hydrogen possess 3 kind of isotopesnamely - protium (1H1), deuterium (2H1) and tritium (3H1).

Some types of isotopes are applied in the process of labelling for various researches . Like, isotopes of hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen etc. are used for labelling process.

It is also used for nuclear imaging of various tissues for detection of cancer. fluorine-18, gallium-67 etc. are commonly used for this purpose.
