Explanation:

Nitrogen has 5 electrons in outermost shell. hydrogen has 1 electron in outermost shell.

Nearest noble gas to N is neon which has 8 electrons in outermost shell.

Nitrogen in order to attain the noble gas configuration has to gain 3 electrons. In order to combine with hydrogen it has to hain stability for which it gains 3 electrons 1 from each hydrogen molecule. It cannot combine with neither more than 3 hydrogen atoms nor less than 3.

Each hydrogen ato also loses 1 electron and gains stability. Hydrogen is a special case bcoz it does not gain the electronic configuration of any noble gas but rather loses all electrons.
