- Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar: He was a legendary scholar and social reformer who, while he was playing a key role in the passage of the Widow Remarriage Act, changed not only his Bengali alphabet and style but also questioned Hindu orthodoxy. It was in 1854 that Vidyasagar began his campaign for widow remarriage. His continuous and sustained efforts, finally resulted in the passing of the Widow Remarriage Act on 26th July 1856.
- Raja Rammohan Roy: He was one of the founders of the Brahmo Sabha a social-religious reform movement in the India . In 1829, Lord William Bentick abolished the Sati regime through the efforts of Raja Ram mohan Roy by declaration of it as an offense. These promoted press freedom and condemned the government's imposition of any limits on it. It sponsored the marriage of widows and girls ' education
- Jyothibhai Phule: He was a prominent social reformer and thinker of the nineteenth century India. Jyotiba recognized the pathos of the widows and established an ashram for young widows and eventually encouraged Widow Remarriage. Jyotiba was saddened by the sufferings of widows and in 1854 founded an orphanage to shield the unfortunate souls from their cruelty.
