• Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar: He was a legendary scholar and social reformer who, while he was playing a key role in the passage of the Widow Remarriage Act, changed not only his Bengali alphabet and style but also questioned Hindu orthodoxy. Jyotiba recognized the pathos of the widows and established an ashram for young widows and eventually encouraged Widow Remarriage. Jyotiba was saddened by the sufferings of widows and in 1854 founded an orphanage to shield the unfortunate souls from their cruelty.
