TUBEROUS ROOTS:these roots arise from internodes of stem become fleshy and tuberous as a result of food storage
EX: sweet potato(ipomea batata )
FASICULATED ROOTS:these are produced from base or lower node of stem.
EX:(dahlia)
MONILIFORM:these roots are swollen at regular intervals giving bead like appearance
EX:(momordica,portulaca.)
ANNULATED ROOTS:formed by a numberof swollen discs placed one above the other it looks like a series of swellings.
EX:(cephaelis,psychotria.)
PALMATE ROOTS:these roots are branched such that they give the appearanceof the palm of human hand
EX:(orchis,aconitum)
NODULOSE ROOTS:these roots are swollen at their tips .
Ex:(curcuma amada,curcuma domestica and maranta.)
BUTTRESS ROOTS:these roots radiate from the base of mechanical support
ex:(ficus,bombax,salmalia,terminalia)
STILT ROOTS & BRACE ROOTS:these roots develop from the basal nodes of the stem near the soil ,provide mechanical support by fixing the plant firmly in soil.
ex:(saccharam officinarum,zea mays ,pandanus tincotorius)
PROP OR PILLAR ROOTS:these roots develop from the large horizantal aerial branched. these grow vertically down wards penatrate in to soil and becomes thick so they give a pillar like appearance .
ex banyan
CONTRACTILE ROOTS: these roots become thick fleshy and contractile . these remain associated with underground stems
ex:crocus
CLIMBING OR CLINING ROOTS:these roots arise from the nodes and help the plant in climbing
ex: ficus pumila
PHOTOSYNTHETIC ROOTS :plants develop chlorophyll and become green . these perform photosynthesis .
ex:trapa,tinospora,podostemons
PARASITIC OR HAUSTORIAL ROOTS: these roots are developed by the parasitic plant s , these penatrate host tissue for absorbing nourishment.
ex: cuscuta, duranra , acacia
EPIPHYTIC ROOTS : the roots of the epiphytes hang in the air they absorb hydroscopic water present in the atmosphere by special tissue.
ex:vanada, dendrobium.
