Electrolysis of water is the decomposition of water (H2O) into oxygen (O2) and hydrogen gas (H2) due to an electric current being passed through the water. The reaction has a standard potential of −1.23 V, meaning it ideally requires a potential difference of 1.23 volts to split wate

Explain with help of an activity " electrolysis of water "

  • Take a glass beaker fix two electrodes. The positive electrode acts as anode &negative electrode act as cathode.
  • Fill 1/3 of beaker with water.
  • Take two test tubes.
  • Insert on electrodes. Observe the level of water in the test tubes.
  • Connect the electrodes to a battery. Pass the electricity for a period of time.
  • Later switch off the current and observe the level of water in test tubes.
  • The level of water in the test tubes is decreased.
  • The free space in the test tubes is filled with H2 & O2 gases.
  • Oxygen gas is evolved at anode and hydrogen gas released at cathode.
