the population of a region mainly depends on the geographical relief of that place.
the place with mountains and high lands are mostly scarce in population due to less vegetation on mountains whereas the plains have very dense populations due to the fertile lands .
Second reason may be the availability of work . If the work is not available for the people they preferably shift to a place with higher rate of work and good income rather than staying in the places with scarce work .
culture too plays a part in distribution of people . Most of the people prefer to stay in their own community rather than being part of others .
these are the most basic factors affecting population in a region .
I hope it helped .
