The soil formation process depends upon the presence of new soil material which is either acquired by denudation or deposition. Denudation is the abrasion of present rock material by the action of ice, water or wind. Deposition is the accumulation of new materials that have been eroded from another place such as river gravels or blown gravel or the creation of new rocks due to volcanic action or the uplift of the ocean.

The formation of soil is described below :

1. About million years ago, many big rocks covered our Earth.

2. These rocks were then heated up by the sun and also were cooled by rain. Because of heating as well as cooling, cracks developed on the rocks.

3. Rocks then broke down into small pieces because of the cracks.

4. The broked pieces of rocks were then carried to various other places by wind.

5. These pieces then gets mixed with remains of dead animals and plants.

This way soil is formed.
