Explanation:
Refraction
It is defined as the change in the path of light rays(bending ) when it travels from one medium to another .
Cause
The difference in the densities of medium due to which speed of light is different in a medium .
Mediums
- Rarer : density is less , speed of light is more
- Denser : density is more , speed of light is less
Similarly , the refraction is also seen in atmosphere and is called as atmospheric refraction .
Atmospheric refraction
It is the bending of light rays on passing through atmosphere due to difference in the densities of layers of atmosphere .
The upper layers being rarer (as they are closed to sun ), lower layers being comparatively denser .
There are certain phenomenon that are seen due to atmospheric refraction .Out of which the above asked sunset and sunrise 2 minutes before the actual time .
The sun when below the horizon, the light of it when enters the Earth's atmosphere suffer atmospheric refraction .
It bends towards the normal ray . Due to continuous refraction of light rays at each layer, the ray follows the curved path and reaches the eye of the observer. As a result , we see this that is sunrise and sunset
before 2 minutes than the actual time
