Explain with the help of an example why evolution Cannot be equated with progress.

according to the theory of Charles Darwin....the theory of natural selection....he has stated that if an animal aquires the characters that is suitable to the surroundings than only he could survive.... because all the living organisms compete in a life threating manner....and the organism which aquires the characters love and the rest perish.... because of this principle evolution cannot be equated with progress ...as it takes millions of years to evolve any organ for example the tail bone... progress is rapid but evolution is slow going process

Evolution should not be equated as progressive as it is more suitable  as branched. New organisms with different species have evolved but the organisms of previous species still exist. Eg. Humans are the complex organisms present but the simplest organisms like bacteria are also present. Class Aves has developed from Reptalia but reptiles are also present along with birds.
