as we know electronic configuration of magnesium is 2,8,2 therefore it has 2 electrons in its outermost shell and require 6 more electrons to complete its octet but it requires a lot of energy so it looses two electrons.
Electronic configuration of chlorine is 2,8,7 which means it has 7 electrons in its outermost shell and need to gain 1 more electron to complete its octet.
but we know that chlorine needs only one electron while magnesium has two electrons to give so it will form ionic bond with two chlorine atoms.
[Mg+] + [Cl-]+ [Cl-] ➡[Mg+] [Cl2-]
MgCl2
hope it helps you.
