Answer:

a. Reduced usage of chemical pesticides: This is possiblethrough developing pest resistant plants. RNA interference is the phenomenon of inhibiting the activity of a gene through production of sense and antisense RNAs. The two RNAs would produce a dsRNA. It undergoes fragmentation to form short segments, called short interference RNA -siRNA, an SiRNA develops a silencing complex, RISC. RISC or RNA induced silencing complex cleaves mRNA having complementary base sequence and makes the latter silent. The phenomenon is called mRNA silencing. It is a common method of cellular defence in eukaryotic organisms. The source of dsRNA can be infection of ribovirus or transposon that replicates via RNA intermediate. With the help of T-DNA plasmid of Agarobacterium, nematode specific genes are introduced in host plant. They both produce sense and antisense RNAs which forms dsRNAs to initiate RNAi and silence mRNAs of the nematode. As a result nematode cannot survive in the transgenic plant and dies down.

b. Enhance nutritional value of food: Genetically engineered Golden rice is rich in Vitamin A and Protein rich potato has been developed.
