In a half-wave rectifier circuit, a load resistance is connected in series with the PN junction diode. Alternating current is the input of the half wave rectifier. A step down transformer takes input voltage and the resulting output of the transformer is given to the load resistor and to the diode.

In half wave rectifier, current is allowed to pass in only one direction. So, when there is AC flow of current, current fluctuates in both directions, unlike DC where current flows in a constant direction, the rectifier will allow current of only one direction to pass, thus converting AC into DC.
