It is known as a combination reaction. If hydrogen gas is made to pass over pre-heated copper oxide ( CuO ). As a result, the black coating on the surface turns brown as the reverse reaction takes place and copper is obtained. So when hydrogen gas is passed over copper oxide copper is obtained.
